SRR #61 | Interview: Jason Petersen on Scripturalist Apologetics

In this episode of Semper Reformanda Radio Tim Shaughnessy interviews Jason Peterson, a fellow Clarkian, on the publication of his new book Apologetics Made Simple: Five Keys to an Unstoppable Apologetic. Join the discussion as Tim and Jason they also talk about apologetics and the Clarkian perspective of the Transcendental Argument. Can you prove the Bible is true or that God exists? What is the problem one will face if they try to prove their first principle, ultimate standard or axiomatic starting point?

We want to thank Jason Peterson for participating in the show and we want to recommend Jason's website to our listeners.

SRR #55 | Roman Catholics & The Mingled Cup Part 3

Join Tim Shaughnessy and Tim Kauffman on this week’s episode of Semper Reformanda Radio for part three in this mini series on the Roman Catholic practice of mixing water with wine in the Mass during the Lords Supper. Does the Roman Catholic church have an apostolic tradition that the Protestants do not have? Roman Catholic apologist will appeal to the early church fathers to show that there was an apostolic rite of adding water to wine during the Lord's supper and they will use this to argue that the Roman Catholic church is, therefore, the true church. Furthermore, the official dogma of the Roman Catholic church holds that if you reject this practice then you are anathema.Join us in this final installment of this series as Tim Kauffman refutes their position and shows why this practice of mixing water with wine during the Lord's supper stems from a historical misunderstanding. The practice of mixing water with wine is a novelty of the late 4th century. Tim Kauffman does another fantastic job of explaining why the Roman Catholic system is built on a house of cards.

SRR #50 | Answering Questions Christians Have For Other Christians Part 2

Join Tim and Carlos and Joseph Rios as they read a complaint email by a fellow podcaster and discuss the use of the term synergistic in relation to conversion. Then they continue to give answers to the youtube video Questions Christians Have for Other Christians. Listen in as Semper Reformanda Radio takes up the defense of Biblical Christianity which may not be popular in some circles today. We strongly believe that the youtube video, which is extremely popular, is a good representation of professing Christians who almost completely lack discernment. As John Robbins wrote: "The lack of discernment is the lack of wisdom and knowledge. It is an intellectual deficiency. Professed churches and professed Christians lack discernment today because they do not know or believe the truth. They profess to, but they do not. Those who decry the lack of discernment in today’s churches usually fail to attribute that lack to its first cause: the purpose, plan, and providence of God. Further, they fail to indicate how God carries out his plan, how he darkens minds, how he withholds his light and his face. Objectively this darkening is the dearth of preaching and publication of the Word; subjectively it is the rejection of revealed truth, including, at the present time, the revealed truth about logical thought."

Public Service Announcements

ADDENDUM (6/12/2017): I, Carlos Montijo, am deeply sorry and apologize to Andrew Rappaport for misrepresenting what he said about Covenant Theology in his interview with Theology Gals Episode 8 (http://biblethumpingwingnut.com/2017/04/03/theology-gals-episode-8-dispensationalism-andrew-rappaport/). I misunderstood what he said at minute 12:40 by assuming he was referring to the claim that the threefold division of the law came from Aquinas, based on a previous discussion that wasn’t public. We are removing that portion from the episode. I deeply regret giving our listeners the impression that brother Andrew was sloppy or careless in his presentation of Covenant Theology. Quite the opposite is true, for anyone who knows him is aware that he is extremely diligent to be as fair and accurate as possible when presenting views that are not his own. We at Semper Reformanda Radio share the same convictions and strive to emulate his quintessential example. I am also very grateful to brother Andrew for the opportunity he provided me to discuss Covenant Theology and New Covenant Theology with Louis Lyons, and for being able to participate in his Clashing of Theologies series, because brother Andrew recognizes the importance of direct interaction with one another, especially opposing views, which in many cases is far more fruitful than one-sided monologues.

I also want to clarify my comments about Jason Mullett being “largely ignorant” of New Covenant Theology. It was not at all meant to be an insult or jab, nor was I at all implying or suggesting that I would have been the “better” representative against Dustin Segers, who is a knowledgeable and seasoned NCT proponent. It was simply based on what Jason himself said on Conversations From The Porch #50 @42:55, that he had not done a lot of reading on NCT and that the only thing he had read was the first three chapters of Charles Leiter’s The Law of Christ. Anyone who actually listened to our episode knows that I commended brother Jason for being an excellent debater, especially on topics that he knows well, such as his discussions with Leighton Flowers on Calvinism (http://biblethumpingwingnut.com/2017/04/24/lbm-episode-0068-dialogue-dr-leighton-flowers-libertarian-free-will/; even Flowers commended Jason for representing the Calvinist view well). I said I was disappointed because if Jason had done more reading, he would have been better prepared to interact with Dustin’s arguments, some of which were based on misunderstandings of the Reformed faith.

One example is in minute 53:00 of CFTP Episode 50, where Dustin claims that the Reformed view equates the moral law to the Ten Commandments (exclusively) and further claims that, historically this is how Reformed guys have always defined it. Unfortunately, many New Covenant Theology proponents make this error. Conversations From The Porch has continued to repeat this error, despite our attempts to correct it, including in this episode. All they need to do is read the Westminster Larger Catechism, Questions 93 and 98:

  1. 93. What is the moral law?

  2. The moral law is the declaration of the will of God to mankind, directing and binding everyone to personal, perfect, and perpetual conformity and obedience thereunto, in the frame and disposition of the whole man, soul and body, and in performance of all those duties of holiness and righteousness which he oweth to God and man: promising life upon the fulfilling, and threatening death upon the breach of it.

  3. 98. Where is the moral law summarily comprehended?

  4. The moral law is summarily comprehended in the ten commandments, which were delivered by the voice of God upon Mount Sinai, and written by him in two tables of stone; and are recorded in the twentieth chapter of Exodus. The four first commandments containing our duty to God, and the other six our duty to man. (http://www.reformed.org/documents/wlc_w_proofs/)

I nevertheless think Jason did a great job and hope he continues to study NCT and engage in discussions/debates with them (perhaps we can even join forces in the future 😉). Maybe it would have been better for me to say that Jason’s knowledge of NCT was limited as opposed to “largely ignorant of”. I have no problem admitting that I am largely ignorant of many things, and I’m sure Jason is far more knowledgeable than I am about many things. As fellow Reformed Baptists we are very much in agreement with Jason and even listed his episode on NCT on our playlist (http://biblethumpingwingnut.com/2017/03/22/semper-reformanda-radio-new-covenant-theology-playlist-resources/). I did not at all dismiss Jason for not being a Sabbatarian, as Pastor Paul Kaiser of Conversations From The Porch claimed in minute 53:00 of their recent episode (http://biblethumpingwingnut.com/2017/06/10/cftp-presents-ramblings-porch-public-service-correction/), nor did I ever say that Jason didn't know what he was talking about, or “immodestly imply” that I would have done better, as Ryan Dozier claimed in minute 51:30.

I hope that we can have more dialogue/discussions in the future and sharpen each other as brothers in Christ.

Semper Reformanda,

Carlos Montijo

“Scripturalism—Christianity—is a whole view of things thought out together. It engages non-Christian philosophies on every field of intellectual endeavor. It furnishes a coherent theory of knowledge, an infallible salvation, a refutation of science, a theory of the world, a coherent and practical system of ethics, and the principles required for political liberty and justice. No other philosophy does.” (John Robbins, “An Introduction to Gordon H. Clark,” http://www.trinityfoundation.org/journal.php?id=192)

SRR #45 | Roman Catholics and Their Queen Part 5

This week SRR welcomes Timothy F. Kauffman back to the show for the final installment in our series on the Roman Catholic doctrine of Mary. In this episode, we read some email from one of our listeners and try to answer the question of whether or not Roman Catholics are Christian. Then we jump into the Roman Catholic doctrine of Mary and consider whether or not she was assumed bodily into heaven. We also re-address whether or not the Roman Catholics are correct in identifying the woman of Revelation 12:1-6 as Mother Mary. Tim Kauffman does another fantastic job of leading us in our discussion of the Roman Catholic arguments and explains why their system is nothing more than a house of cards. As always we want to thank Tim Kauffman and recommend his blog whitehorseblog.com to our listeners.

SRR #44 | Roman Catholics and Their Queen Part 4

This week SRR welcomes Timothy F. Kauffman back to the show for part 4 in our discussion on the Roman Catholic doctrine of Mary. In this episode, we look at the perpetual virginity of Mary and ask if it was what the early church believed and more importantly if it is what the Bible teaches. We also address whether or not the Roman Catholics are correct in identifying the woman of Revelation 12:1-6 as Mother Mary. Tim Kauffman does another fantastic job of leading us in our discussion of the Roman Catholic arguments and explains why their system is nothing more than a house of cards. As always we want to thank Tim Kauffman and recommend his blog whitehorseblog.com to our listeners.

SRR 43 Roman Catholics and Their Queen Part 3

This week SRR welcomes Timothy F. Kauffman back to the show for the second part of our discussion of the Roman Catholic doctrine of Mary. Tim Shaughnessy begins by recounting his experience calling into the Bible Answer Man with Hank Hanegraaff and Tim Kauffman offers some helpful insight and perspective. Then the two dive into the Roman Catholic view of Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant. This may be an unfamiliar title of Mary for some Protestants, but it is very important to understand because from this Rome tries to establish Mary as the immaculate conception along with other erroneous doctrines. Tim Kauffman does a fantastic job of leading us in our discussion of the Roman Catholic arguments from scripture for their view and as always he shows us why they are wrong.

As always we want to thank Tim Kauffman and recommend his blog whitehorseblog.com to our listeners.
